Euro 2020 Qualifying Guide: How are Home Nations Looking and Which of the Big Teams Might Struggle to Make It?

UEFA European Championship is a nail-biter this time around. This is the first-time host countries will not automatically qualify for the Championship since 1976. Will the Home Nations qualify? What about the big teams? Keep reading to find out!

England

After qualifying for the World Cup Semi-Finals and Nations League Finals, England has got high expectations on its shoulders. Southgate is depending on his trusty team of young players to make it to Euro 2020.

Scotland

Scotland’s outstanding performance in Nations League last year has earned them a play-off place. If they do not finish in the top two places of the qualifying rounds, they’ll face off teams of their own caliber in the play-offs.

Wales

Azerbaijan, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Wales were drawn for group matches. While manager Giggs remains uncertain, they hope to finish in second place, after Croatia. With Gareth Bale back in form, they hope to qualify this time.

Republic of Ireland

According to McCarthy, the new manager, they were happy to not be drawn in Group C with the Netherlands and Germany. Nonetheless, Ireland will be up for a tough match against both Denmark and Switzerland.

Northern Ireland

The chances of Northern Ireland qualifying with a group containing the Netherlands and Germany are improbable at best. They’ve lost all of their matches in the Nations League as well.

Germany

Manager Joachim Low has brought in a revamped team for Euro 2020. Hummels, Boateng, and Mueller were nowhere to be seen. However, Germany will keep playing with full vigor.

Netherlands

With the Nations League win in their bag, Netherlands is looking great for qualifying in Euro 2020. Apart from Germany, who they’ll definitely aim to finish above, they will play comfortably in the matches against the other teams.

Portugal

With Ronaldo back, Portugal is looking forward to a good qualifying round. Even with him absent however Portugal had come out on top of their Nations League group, containing Italy and Poland.

France

France needs to qualify against Turkey, Moldova, Iceland, Albania, and Andorra. They should not have any problems qualifying with their excellent players for Euro 2020.

Spain

Enrique, Spain’s manager, is gearing up the team for successful qualifying matches. He won’t have to worry much; even with some old faces missing, Spain looks good to go in Group F.

Italy

Roberto Mancini is also bringing in a young team this time, with five players being under the age of 22. Although they had a horrendous World Cup, Italy is hopeful. The team has improved, according to the manager, and they have a positive feeling about it.

Croatia

Being World Cup Finalists, Croatia is sure to beat the other teams in Group E. Although they finished last in their Nations League group, they shouldn’t have a problem here.

Belgium

With Scotland, Cyprus, Russia, Kazakhstan, and San Marino in Group I, Belgium should top their group without much difficulty. Coming second in their group from Nations League, they should be safe to qualify for Euro 2020.
